2008 Education/Clinics

Beginner/Novice Paddling Clinic (May 31 - June 1, registration deadline May 15)
Swiftwater Rescue (July 26-27, registration deadline July 14)
National Youth Science Camp (July 12-13)

 

Beginner/Novice Paddling Clinic

The two-day Beginner/Novice clinic will be held on May 31-June 1 on the Upper New River. Groups will be separated into beginners (with little or no whitewater experience) and novices (with limited Class I and II experience).

On Saturday, clinic participants will work on learning basic paddling strokes, eddy turns, peel-outs, and ferries. Participants will also focus on safety and some basic river reading skills. Sunday will feature a trip on the Upper New River with participants working on newly learned skills.

The class size is limited to 16 students and the registration deadline is May 15. The cost is noted in the registration form..

Swiftwater Rescue (SWR) Clinic

The WVWA is offering this two-day clinic on July 26-27. The location of the clinic will be based on water conditions at the time. This clinic is geared toward adult intermediate paddlers. Day 1 will cover rescue3 organization, swimming, wading, and the use of throw bags and rescue life vests. Day 2 will cover boat unpinning, anchors, Z-drags, in-boat entrapment, foot entrapment, and various rescue scenarios.

The class size is limited to 10 students and the registration deadline is July 14. The cost is $50 per student. This includes the course materials (10 feet of webbing, 6 feet of prussic cord and 1 carabiner).
