Can you help with the annual kayak trip for the National Youth Science Camp on July 12-13? The state of West Virginia hosts The National Youth Science Camp (NYSC) each summer. For the past 25+ years, the West Virginia Wildwater Association has arranged a kayak trip for some of these kids. If you've done it before you know how much fun it is, for the kids and for us. If you haven't, come and find out. These are amazingly nice kids and it's a joy to introduce them to paddling. We'll be doing the Glade Creek to Grandview Sandbar section of the Upper New this year, taking 30 kids down the river on Saturday, camping out Saturday night, and then taking another 30 kids down the same stretch of river on Sunday. Free camping will be available Friday and Saturday nights at Burnwood (across Route 19 from the NRG Visitor Center). We try to provide one experienced guide per science camper, so we need lots of folks to help out on the river. We also have to come up with at least 30 extra boats with gear for the campers. If you can't come but you have gear that you'd be willing to loan, PLEASE do. We'll arrange to pick it up and return it to you. This year we are combining our annual club picnic and bi-monthly club meeting with the dinner on Saturday evening. As usual, family members and friends are very welcome. There's a $5 charge for each person to cover the cost. Parking space at the takeout is limited, so please bring a trailer to haul boats if you can. Please register for the event by TBD. Click here to register online, or use the form in the June issue of Splashes or on the WVWA web site at www.wvwa.net/nysc2008.pdf. Important!! If you are using the form on the web site (nysc2008.pdf), fill in the form before printing it. Use the tab key to move from field to field. Then print the completed form and mail it to the contact information on the second page. If you have any questions, call Bridget Tincher at 304-562-2745 or send her an email at science.camper@wvwa.net. You can learn more about the NYSC at www.nysc.org/. |
